Office of Admissions

  • All undergraduate students are reviewed holistically in the admissions process. We want to learn about who our students are, what they are passionate about and what they can contribute to the App State Community.
  • Reimagined positions to serve our underrepresented populations. These positions include the Assistant Director of:
    • Hispanic/Latinx StudentRecruitment
    • Black/African-American Student Recruitment
    • Special Populations (Rural and First-generation)
  • Established incoming student newsletter, The Mountaineer Inclusive with collaboration with the Sr. Associate Director of Diversity Initiatives and other campus partners

  • Increased offerings of Spanish-speaking campus tours for prospective students

  • Worked closely with a Spanish intern to create a translated admissions one-sheeter

  • Expansion of the AsULead Program that serves underrepresented populations and provides developmental and college readiness skills. Students who attend have guaranteed admission to App State

Graduate

  • Reviewing policies and processes to break down barries for students in the graduate admissions process

Transfer Admissions & Engagement

  • The recruitment of transfer students contributes to the overall diversity of the university as they are a subpopulation with higher percentages of first generation students and rural students than the first-year classes.
  • Hosted diversity specific events at Community Colleges in North Carolina with collaboration with the Sr. Associate Director of Diversity Initiatives
  • Continued research on how to improve training for faculty, staff, and students around diversity of transfer students

Student Financial Aid & University Scholarships

  • Modified the awarding process of the Appalachian Excellence Scholarship to increase the diversity of students awarded; this increased under-represented, rural, and low-income households
